Tokens On Me

Connect an OpenAI project API key

Allowances on GPT can spend from your OpenAI account. Tokens On Me takes an API key of one of your projects and calls OpenAI’s Responses API with it, at its standard prices, with response storage disabled.

Before you start

OpenAI’s terms let a minor use its services only with a parent’s or guardian’s consent, which this service cannot check. Give allowances on OpenAI only to people of 18 or older: you confirm it when you connect the key, and each person confirms their age when they accept an allowance or claim one.

Only an API key works. A ChatGPT login, such as Codex’s “Sign in with ChatGPT”, is a person’s plan and is refused, as OpenAI’s terms ask. An admin key, which manages a whole organization, is refused too.

OpenAI does not train on what is sent through the API unless you opt in, and keeps abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days. We don’t store prompts or answers.

Create a project and its key

A dedicated project keeps allowance spending and limits separate from your other projects.

  1. In the OpenAI dashboard, create a project for your allowances.
  2. Limit the project to the models you mean to give, with its model allowlist, so a key of this project can reach nothing else.
  3. On the API keys page, create a key in that project, with an expiry date, as OpenAI recommends. Copy it: it starts with sk-proj-.

Set a hard spend limit

A project can have a monthly spend limit that OpenAI enforces: once it is reached, requests are refused until you raise it or the month ends. OpenAI writes that enforcement is not instantaneous, so spend can go slightly over. Tokens On Me also sets money aside on each allowance before every request.

  1. Open the project’s settings, then Limits.
  2. In Spend, choose Edit spend limit, enter the monthly limit, and turn on Enforce a hard limit. Save.
  3. Add a spend alert below it, so you hear before the limit stops your allowances.

Connect it

  1. Sign in, open Keys, paste the key under OpenAI, confirm that your allowances on it go only to people of 18 or older, and save.
  2. Create an allowance in Allowances and choose this provider key.

Stop access

On the API keys page, revoke the key: OpenAI refuses every request made with it from then on. Disconnecting it on the Keys screen stops new requests through this service immediately.
